others. he's still at large and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >

. we trained him. i learned today that dorner sent me a package to my office here in cnn in new york. the package arrived on february 1st. i receive a lot of strange packages and letters and we have a system in place for dealing with them. i did not personally see this package or know about it until today. the package contained a dvd and a bullet-riddled keepsake coin called the challenge coin. it's nomhis former boss, william bradden, who joins me shortly to talk about it. that coin had three bullet holes in the center, as you can see. and one partial hole on its edge, on the upper right-hand corner of the coin. we're going to show you more of the contents of that package in a moment. in addition, we're going to talk to a veteran crime reporter about ways of stopping a revenge killer, and chris lawrence on the type of sniper training the suspect has. but we begin with randi kaye. >> we're under attack. that was the word from one california police lieutenant after at li threast three offic were shot early thursday morning. one officer died. police say the shooter is this man, 33-year

's manifesto. >> dorner is armed and dangerous. >> this video obtained exclusively by cnn shows dorner just 12 hours after the irvine killings, apparently placing a military belt, a helmet and ammunition behind an auto parts store in san diego. >> of course he knows what he's doing, we trained him. he was also a member of the armed forces. it is extremely worrisome and scary, especially to the police officers involved. >> hours after that press conference with southern california police on high alert, at 10:30 p.m., dorner slipped into this san diego marina, boarded a boat and surprised its owner. >> he pointed a handgun at the victim who was an 81-year-old male and demanded the boat. >> dorner told the man he wanted to flee to mexico. >> the suspect then attempted to start the boat. >> but a rope became caught in the boat's propeller, delaying dorner's escape. >> at that point the suspect became frustrated, took a few small items, including cell phone and some other miscellaneous items from inside the boat, tied the victim up and left in an unknown direction. >> he didn't harm the 81-year-old
rome, john allen of cnn. he covers the vatican for the network and for the "national catholic reporter." we thank you all three for being with us. john allen, i'm going to stay with you. how much of a surprise was this? >> judy, i think this was a near total shock. just to tell you how crazy it was, i was actually scheduled to have lunch with a senior vatican official, a guy who works ju down the hall from the papal apartment. as of early this morning even he didn't know it was coming. as your set-up piece indicated the shock isn't the content of the decision -- benedict had hinted fairly openly that he was receptive to the idea of a pope resigning, that actually under some circumstances a pope would have an obligation to resign if he's not able to continue to perform his duties. but certainly the timing of it, i think, fell out of a clear blew sky just like the rain we're experiencing in rome here tonight. >>woodruff: monsignor hilgartner, what about the timing of this? what does it say that he made this decision especially in contrast to what his predecessor pope john paul had been t
the force bitter. in a lengthy letter apparently written by doerner and provided to cnn by an lapd source, he alleged 3 threatened to use his navy training to harm police officers involved in the case and their families. quoting here, i will bring unconventional and a symmetrical warfare to those in lapd uniform weather on or off duty. now an irvine couple is shot to death in the parking deck of their upscale complex. the victims are monica quan and her fiance. her father, randy was a retired cop who worked with dorner. inside night, police name christopher jordan dorner the chief suspect in the sunday night murders. police warees erous. dorner is say reservist known to be a skilled marksman. thursday around 1:30 in the morning, ktla reports doerner is spotted in corona. two police officers are in purr cute when dorner gets out of the truck and starts firing. one was grazed and the other not hurt. dorner flees. then a short time later, another shooting involving cops. this time in riverside. police say two officers on routine patrol are shot after being ambushed at an intersection. one of
